Social psychology is the scientific study of how peoples thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. Through the use of the empirical method thoughts, feelings, and behaviors include are all measurable psychological variables within the field. Social psychologists postulate that are continuously exposed to social even influences even when no other people are present thanks in part to the media and internalized cultural norms. Social psychologists typically explain human behavior as a result of the interaction of mental states and immediate social situation. The Masters program in social psychology generally involves two years of study beyond a four-year bachelors degree. Many psychologists who obtain a Masters within the field go on to teach and do research in universities and colleges, housed mostly in departments of psychology but also in departments of business, education, political science, justice studies, law, health sciences, and medicine. Many personality and social psychologists are also employed in the private sector as consultants, researchers, marketing directors, managers, political strategists, technology designers, and so forth. Prerequisites include an essay and letters of recommendation.
